What this means for your shop

For pet merchants the message is clear: at 48.5%, Shopify is the industry standard, with WooCommerce at 22.5% the largest migration pool. Anyone still self-hosted forgoes performance and a mature app ecosystem.

The tool stack follows the DTC pattern: Shopify plus Klaviyo, Judge.me, WhatsApp Business and a wallet-first checkout. The clearest pet signature is the subscription model, because pet food is a predictable repeat-purchase business.

This is exactly where the migration lever lies: subscription apps like Seal Subscriptions and Recharge capture automatic food replenishment, a revenue model that is part of the standard repertoire on Shopify.

Sources & methodology

This is our own analysis of the technology detection of the HTTP Archive (crawl of 1 August 2026, mobile home pages, deduplicated per domain). From all shops detected as e-commerce, we classified pet shops via the shop description (OpenGraph and Twitter metadata). To reduce the fuzziness typical for this industry, we only considered shops with unambiguous product signals (e.g. pet food, pet supplies, pet products, aquarium) and excluded service providers such as vets, shelters and grooming salons. A manual sample check then found around 80% precision. All percentages refer to the 5,247 classified shops. The automatic technology detection is not perfect in every individual case, and pure back-end apps without a visible code fingerprint are not captured.
